Above the Colosseum, Rome

Above the Colosseum, Rome is an elegant and meticulously crafted artwork created using a mixed technique of acrylic and charcoal on cotton canvas. The painting captures the majestic Colosseum of Rome, its weathered façade standing as a testament to the passage of time and human resilience. The surrounding piazza is alive with strolling figures and framed by a touch of nature, represented by a few trees.

The focal point is the Colosseum itself, sketched entirely in charcoal, with its cracks and worn sections symbolizing both the transience of human endeavors and the enduring legacy of this monumental structure. Above the iconic amphitheater, two parachutists soar gracefully, evoking themes of strength and freedom, offering a striking contrast to the grounded ancient architecture.

On the right side of the composition, a precise technical drawing of the Colosseum’s floor plan reflects my architectural background, adding depth and a contemporary twist to the piece. This element is inspired by the technical precision seen in the works of Christo and Jeanne-Claude.

The background is enriched by an acrylic sunflower-yellow pattern, reminiscent of the Colosseum’s shapes and a famous Roman mosaic, blending history with my past experience as a fashion designer for Louis Vuitton. The combination of the bold yellow and the delicate charcoal forms creates a dynamic yet harmonious interplay of past and present.

Completely handmade, I have signed this piece on both the front and back of the canvas. It is finished with a double layer of protective matte varnish to guard against UV rays and ensure lasting quality over time. The painting is ready to hang and includes a Certificate of Authenticity.
