Judith
Part of the Urban Expressionism series, Judith captures a moment of raw emotion and unyielding strength. The painting portrays the upper body of a woman mid-scream, her piercing blue eyes brimming with intensity. She wears a striking earring in the shape of boxing gloves, symbolizing resilience and defiance.
Inspired by the biblical tale of Judith and Holofernes, the artwork focuses on Judith’s internal rage before her act of defiance—beheading the tyrannical general to save her people. Unlike classical representations by Caravaggio and Artemisia Gentileschi that highlight the violent act, this piece delves into the psychological and emotional turmoil preceding it.
The scream reflects not only the courage of a historic heroine but also echoes the broader struggles faced by women, past and present. It draws a subtle parallel to Artemisia Gentileschi’s personal story, where her depiction of Judith is often interpreted as an expression of her own fight against injustice and trauma.
This mixed-media piece features textured layers and bold contrasts, brought to life with gesso, acrylics, and soft pastels. A double layer of matte varnish ensures durability and protects the vibrant emotions it conveys.
Judith is a striking exploration of feminine strength and resilience, a modern reinterpretation of a timeless narrative.
